How Long Does it Take to Grill Chicken?

Wondering how long to grill chicken? It takes about 5 minutes each side, depending on the thickness and overall size of the piece of chicken. The goal is to have slight sear marks on the edges, and to reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit for food safety.

Is Grilled Chicken Healthy?

Chicken is a great way to get high-quality protein and important nutrients into your diet. Chicken is a leaner type of poultry that doesn’t provide a lot of unhealthy fats, like some other cuts of meats. One 3 oz chicken breast provides about 140 calories, 21 grams protein, 3 grams of fat, plus iron, selenium, niacin, vitamin B6, riboflavin, potassium, and more important vitamins and minerals. It’s also fairly low in cholesterol and sodium, depending on preparation.

Grilling chicken is healthy as long as you don’t add a lot of fat, plus be sure to pair it with veggies and other nutritious side dishes. You also want to make sure to cook chicken to the perfect temperature, and not overcook it. The charred pieces of grilled foods may be tasty, but they are not very good for you.

Be sure to have correct portion sizes when you eat grilled chicken. A serving size is typically 3 oz of chicken, about the size of the palm of your hand or the size of a deck of playing cards, about 1 small chicken breast. It may be appropriate to have more than 3 oz, but you’ll want to make sure you don’t overdo it.

What Foods are Highest in Protein?

Grilled chicken is a great choice when you are looking for a meal with lots of high-quality protein, but also low in calories and fat. Especially after a tough workout you need to make sure you are refueling throughout the day with regular protein from nutritious sources. Some other great sources ofprotein are black beans, lentils, low fat dairy products, soybeans, quinoa, oats, nuts, seeds, and even many veggies like spinach, broccoli, and alfalfa sprouts.

This grilled chicken recipe below is perfect for your protein needs. It’s even great for leftovers for meal prep the next day.

How Much Protein Should I Eat Per Day?

The Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. That means a 150 pound person (68 kg) would need about 55 grams of protein per day. Protein requirements depend on other individual factors such as age, activity level, muscle mass, fitness goals, and health.

Typically between 0.8-1.3 grams of protein per kg is beneficial for moderate exercisers. With more exercise, the body requires more protein. Endurance athletes may require 1.2-1.5 grams of protein per kg of body weight, and strength and power athletes may require 1.5-1.7 grams of protein per kg of body weight per day.

It’s actually fairly simple to reach protein requirements. The average American eats plenty of protein per day- even up to 3 times their recommended amount without even trying. A better goal would be to focus on a variety of high-quality proteins coming from nutritious sources, and to make sure to consume enough protein spaced evenly throughout the day at every meal and snack. The Best Grilled Chicken Recipe
Ingredients:
4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/2 cup fat-free Italian dressing
1/2 cup teriyaki sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced

Directions:
In a large bowl, mix together dressing, teriyaki sauce, and garlic. Add chicken breasts and cover with plastic wrap. Stick in the fridge and let marinade for at least 2 hours (I actually prefer to let mine marinade overnight).
Grill over medium high heat, a couple of minutes on each side (until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees).
Serve with grilled vegetables and enjoy!
