Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews in an interview with IGN said its fans prefer shorter and more focused games over games that take upwards of 100 hours to complete.

"I think what we always set out to do is to tell a story and for the game length to be appropriate for the story that we want to tell," Matthews said. "So it's not really a case of setting out to make shorter experiences. I think it is... There is a story that we want to tell here with a beginning, middle and end and what is the right shape and size of experience to tell that story? So that's kind of where we start."

He added, "What I would say as well though is that I think that since digital distribution has become a thing, it has opened the industry up to games of all shapes and sizes, which I think is really great. So I'm really pleased to see that there's a lot of people that actually enjoy a shorter experience, something that they can sit down on a whatever Friday night, stick their headphones on, turn the lights off and kind of sink into an experience and players who don't necessarily want something that is 50 hours long, a 100 hours long, so it's as long as it needs to be. And I'm one of those people, I like shorter games.

"I think there's a lot of pressure on people's time these days and I think our fans, from what we hear from them, they enjoy a shorter game where our intention is that every step of that journey is meaningful… There's an audience of people that want games that are focused."

Matthews said success for Ninja Theory is to have as many players play their games as possible.

"I think success for us is, we would love for as many players to play our games as possible, but I think particularly with Hellblade we love and I love that magic that you can achieve by creating something that makes people think and feel," he said.

"So if I think about the things that I want to achieve in Hellblade 2, once it's released, the thing that will put the biggest smile on my face is to see fans of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and people who like those kind of game saying you've continued Senua's journey in a way that is worthy of that character."

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2will launch for the Xbox Series X|S, PC viaSteamandMicrosoft Store, and Xbox Game Passon May 21.

Being over 50 now... I find myself going back to the shorter games. When you are young and all the time in the world... sure you can sink into an epic RPG or Adventure game. I can't do that anymore, so this is right up my alley.

While I enjoy open-world AAA games that can take 40-50 hours, I only have so much time and can only play 2-3 of them per year at most. So having shorter and more focused games is very welcome to have. I'd personally wouldn't mind if some of the bigger AAA games were more focused with them taking more like 20-30 hours to beat.

method114 trunkswd (on 04 April 2024)

Yea I agree. I just replayed Mass Effect 1 and it took like 25 hours to do absolutely everything on the hardest setting in the game.

  • +3

Agree don't over do it if you don't have to. The older you get the less time you have.

At the same time for a story based game, I would expect it to be at least 6-10 hours (unless it below RRP in price, want to get about $10/h worth lol) long but a max cap at 20-30 would be fantastic.

trunkswd Cobretti2 (on 04 April 2024)

Hellblade 2 is supposed to be the same length as the original game and is priced at $50.

smroadkill15 (on 04 April 2024)

I have no problem with it being a shorter game.

Edit* At the end of the day, what really should matter is if the game is good or not. Judging by the overwhelmingly positive previews, I will say they have a good one.

I a 100% agree.... instead of playing an open world with copy/pasted missions that are an absolute chore.... a more focused fun game is what I want considering my busy work life.

We make short games hence our fans like short game talk about a self fulfilling prophecy.

Random_Matt smroadkill15 (on 05 April 2024)

Still too expensive. A handful of hours for $50, what a rip off. But then again, Xbox players do not buy games anyway, lol.

smroadkill15 Random_Matt (on 05 April 2024)

I thought it was about quality, not quantity? Every time I hear about Xbox needing games, this seems to be argument. Then when they seem to have a good one, it's not long enough or whatever else to be upset about. It seems some can't make up their mind about what to be outraged about.

SanAndreasX smroadkill15 (on 05 April 2024)

Why can't we have both? Plus, I'm not exactly impressed with NT's quality, either. They've always pretty much been the Temu version of Sony Santa Monica.

  • 0

smroadkill15 SanAndreasX (on 05 April 2024)

Did I say it can't? Obviously it can, but it doesn't need to be both. We are talking about Hellblade 2. If anyone played the first game or knows about it, they should know what to expect.

That's cool. Ninja Theory was independent up until 2018 with Hellblade 2 being their first big release under a publisher. Sony Santa Monica was created by Sony so always had funding, resources, and more employees. It should be the better studio.

So much for being a triple AAA titles,
Sounds like a double AA with 30 fps only and then less than 10 hours gameplay lol

Ninja Theory has made it clear this isn't a AAA game.
