Easy Homemade Hypoallergenic Dog Treat Recipe with Baby Food (2024)

For today’s homemade hypoallergenic dog treat recipe, we wanted to do a little something special for our older dogs with fewer teeth. While having fewer teeth doesn’t mean your dog can’t still wolf down his favorite kibble, treats are often a different story. In my experience, treats are often much harder than regular high-quality kibble. Sometimes, you just want to give your senior dog something a little softer that he can savor!

This homemade hypoallergenic treat recipe fits the bill perfectly. It’s easy to make and completely customizable based on your dog’s allergies. I’ll even give you some alternative ingredients to use in case your dog is allergic to any of the ingredients in the recipe. The resulting texture is sort of like a soft cookie, hence the name! You don’t have to buy those specific brands, of course. But if you’re planning to make these treats often, I do recommend checking out that baby food. It comes in 6 varieties so you can easily find something that your dog can tolerate.

Ingredients

• 3 (2 1/2 oz. each) jars (or pouches) of baby food (any meat that your dog can tolerate, or sweet potatoes if Fido is allergic to most major meats)
• 1/4 cuppowdered milk (can substitute with almond meal or specialty non-dairy powdered milk)
• 1/4 cupFlax Seed(see note below)

How to Make

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a cookie sheet
• Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl and stir until combined.
• Using your hands or a cookie scoop, roll the mixture into small bowls.
• Place the balls on the cookie sheet and flatten just a bit with a fork
• Bake for 15 minutes.
• Let cool before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator, or make a larger batch and freeze.

A quick note about the flax seed: our original recipe called for wheat germ in place of flax seed. While this is fine for dogs without allergies, many dogs with allergies can’t tolerate wheat. Flax seed is a good alternative. If your dog doesn’t have allergies, go ahead and use 1/4 cup of wheat germ, as it might be cheaper in the grocery store. Other alternatives includeoat bran or oatmeal.

As far as the baby food goes, you can use pretty much any dog-safe variety. Chicken or beef will give the cookies a nice meaty flavor, but as this is a hypoallergenic dog treat recipe, they may not be the best choices.
