Don’t toss out those old bananas just yet…this homemade banana ice cream recipe will trump anything store-bought, every single time. In fact, you might find yourself buying bananas and not eating them in time just to be able to make this delicious dessert recipe!

No judgment here, friends. None.

Once summer hits, I get on a kick for ice cream. Makes sense, right? It’s hot outside and all I want to do is make myself a cone and kick up my feet. And don’t try to tell me ice cream for dinner is a bad thing, lol.

Plus, since this ice cream recipe has bananas in it, I’m considering this a healthy dosage of my fruit intake for the day.

Old-Fashioned Banana Ice Cream

But please….do not get this old fashioned homemade banana ice cream recipe confused with “ice cream” made with frozen bananas. This is nowhere near the same thing, at all. This decadent and rich banana ice cream recipe tastes more like an ice cream version of banana pudding or maybe a delicious banana bread.

Trust me, friends. If you love old fashioned banana pudding then you are going to love this banana ice cream recipe.

Bluebell has a Banana Pudding Ice cream that I love and I think this recipe is even better! Since you are using super ripe bananas you get the real banana flavor instead of the taste of artificial banana extract.

The recipe is a custard/banana pudding ice cream base made with cream, sugar, eggs a bit of flour and 2 very ripe bananas.

I added nuts to my ice cream, because I love nuts, but it would be awesome with crumbled graham crackers or nilla wafers.

How to Make Banana Ice Cream in the Ice Cream Maker

Have you ever made pudding from scratch? This recipe is basically the same procedure. Since it is a custard base (made with eggs and cream) you do need to heat it on the stovetop to cook the eggs and thicken the base.

In a mixing bowl, beat the sugar into the eggs until light and fluffy. Beat in flour. Set aside.

You’ll then bring the milk to a simmer and beat the hot milk into eggs and sugar. Add salt and cook the ice cream base til thickened.

Puree bananas with a food processor (add a bit of the cream if necessary.)

Add in the bananas and vanilla, chill and then process ice cream in the ice cream maker (I use this one) according to the manufacturer’s directions.

You can serve immediately or transfer to the freezer and let the banana ice cream firm up a bit more before serving.

How Long Will this Homemade Banana Ice Cream Last?

In our house, until it’s all eaten which is about an hour, lol.

But in all reality, since homemade ice cream does not have any stabilizers or preservatives added, it doesn’t hold up that long in the freezer. Maybe 2 weeks in a regular container and up to two months in an airtight container like this one. (I do have and like this container, however homemade ice cream never lasts more than a day or two at our house.)
